About this Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Islam Companion ("Islam Companion", "we", "us", or "our") handles information when you use the Islam Companion mobile application, website, associated APIs and related services (collectively, the "Service").
By using the Service, you acknowledge the practices described in this Policy. Certain privacy rights and requirements may vary depending on where you live.
Information we collect
The information we process depends on which Islam Companion features you choose to use.
How we use your information
We may use information to:
- Create, authenticate and maintain your Islam Companion account.
- Sync bookmarks, notes, Quran reading progress, Hifz activity and user settings.
- Calculate and personalize prayer-related functionality.
- Provide Qibla and location-relevant features.
- Generate your personal Quran and worship journey based on goals you choose.
- Deliver reminders and notifications that you enable.
- Provide Quran search, translation, tafsir, morphology and related study functionality.
- Secure the Service, prevent misuse and investigate technical or security issues.
- Diagnose crashes and improve reliability, accessibility and performance.
- Respond to support requests and feedback.
- Meet applicable legal obligations.
Location data and prayer functionality
Islam Companion may request access to your device location because latitude and longitude are useful for calculating prayer times and determining Qibla direction.
Where technically practical, prayer-time and Qibla calculations are designed to occur on your device using the selected calculation settings. Islam Companion does not require continuous background location access merely to display daily prayer times.
We aim to request the minimum location access reasonably necessary for the feature you are using. You may deny location permission and, where supported, manually choose a location instead.
Quran data, search and AI-assisted features
Islam Companion may use services provided by Quran Foundation or related Quran data providers to retrieve Quran text, translations, tafsir, metadata, search results, morphology and other Quran study information.
When a Quran-related request requires an external service, information necessary to fulfil that request may be transmitted to the relevant provider. We aim not to include unnecessary account information or precise location in Quran-content requests.
Features such as Ask Quran may process the text of your question in order to locate relevant Quranic material and generate a grounded response.
Questions you submit may contain information you choose to provide. Please avoid including unnecessary highly sensitive personal information in free-form questions.
When information may be shared
We do not sell your personal information.
We may disclose limited information to:
- Infrastructure providers used to host APIs, databases, storage, backups or security services.
- Quran content providers when required to retrieve Quran-related information requested through the Service.
- Notification and platform providers such as Apple or Google when required to deliver platform functionality.
- Analytics or diagnostics providers if such services are enabled, subject to appropriate privacy controls and disclosures.
- Legal authorities when disclosure is required by applicable law or necessary to protect users, the Service or legal rights.
- A successor organisation if the Service is involved in a merger, acquisition, restructuring or transfer of assets, subject to applicable legal requirements.
Third-party processors are expected to use data only for the services they provide to us and subject to applicable contractual and legal obligations.
Data retention
We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the Service, maintain your account, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse and protect the Service.
Account-linked information such as bookmarks, notes and reading progress may remain stored while your account is active unless you delete that information or request account deletion.
Technical logs and backups may be retained for limited periods according to operational, security and backup requirements.
Security
Islam Companion uses reasonable technical and organisational safeguards designed to protect information against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure or destruction.
These measures may include encrypted network connections, access controls, secure authentication, restricted production access, monitoring, backups and security updates.
No electronic storage or transmission system can guarantee absolute security. You should also keep your device, account credentials and authentication methods secure.
Your privacy rights and choices
Depending on where you live, applicable privacy law may provide rights concerning your personal information.
These may include the right to:
- Know what personal information we process.
- Request access to your personal information.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
- Request deletion of personal information.
- Request restriction of certain processing.
- Receive certain information in a portable format where applicable.
- Object to certain processing.
- Withdraw consent when processing relies on consent.
- Lodge a complaint with an appropriate data protection authority where applicable.
Account deletion
You may request deletion of your Islam Companion account and associated account data using the account controls provided in the Service or by contacting us.
Some information may be retained where legally required or reasonably necessary for security, fraud prevention, dispute resolution or other legitimate legal purposes.
Children's privacy
Islam Companion contains Quran and worship features that may be useful to families. However, children should not create independent accounts or submit personal information where parental or guardian consent is legally required.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to supervise children's use of connected account features. If we learn that personal information was collected from a child in violation of applicable law, we will take reasonable steps to delete or otherwise address that information.
International data processing
Islam Companion may use infrastructure or service providers located in countries other than your own. This means information may be processed in jurisdictions with different privacy laws.
Where required, we take appropriate steps designed to provide legally recognised protections for international transfers of personal information.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Islam Companion evolves, new features are introduced or legal requirements change.
When we make changes, we will update the effective date displayed at the top of this page. If a change materially affects how personal information is handled, we may provide additional notice through the Service where appropriate.
